Some things Christians tend to say about God and faith are only half truths: “God helps those who help themselves” or “everything happens for a reason” or “love the sinner and hate the sin.” Even though one can find a biblical verse or two that supports these ideas, they miss the point in important ways. Worse still, these half truths can occasionally do harm. They replace sound biblical interpretation and theological reflection with platitudes and clichés that can ultimately turn people away from faith. This course identifies and responds to some of the most common half truths in Christianity. The goal in each case is to prepare participants to more fully understand the whole truth of Scripture in all of its historical and theological complexity.
