Texts of Terror
There are certain passages in the Bible that are hard to stomach, including those that talk about divine wrath, holy war, slavery, violence, the exclusion of outsiders, and gender hierarchy. How are believers to make sense of these so-called “texts of terror”? To what extent are they authoritative for the church today? And is there a way we can interpret them that honors their status as Scripture but still acknowledges the ethical and theological problems they raise? This course aims to address these and other questions about some of the most challenging parts of the Bible. In addition to closely studying a number of examples of texts of terror, this course offers an interpretive strategy for engaging difficult texts in a manner that is both critical and charitable.
